About R.L. Mays Construction

For two decades, R.L. Mays Construction has been building San Diego. With 140 employees skilled in all aspects of commercial and residential wood framing, our company is committed to delivering high quality work to our clients on time and in a safe work environment. Led by company President and Founder Rick Mays, our team has experience building projects in all areas of construction, from multi-unit housing to retail shopping centers to schools. Here are a few of our key employees:

Rick Mays

Rick Mays – President and Founder

With 30 years of experience in the field of construction, Rick Mays brings a level of expertise, reliability and excellence to his work that continues to inspire and instruct others in the industry. He started his career as a carpenter before successfully moving up the ranks of the framing industry, holding positions as a foreman, superintendent and project manager over the years. Since 1991, he has run the San Diego-based wood framing firm, R.L. Mays Construction. Under his leadership, R.L. Mays Construction has become one of the largest framing companies in San Diego, completing hundreds of commercial and residential construction projects of all sizes and types.

Rick and his wife Kathy have a strong sense of community service in their drive to take on charity projects with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together and Project Mercy. Rick currently serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the San Diego chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Through his charity organizations he has helped to build hundreds of houses for the disadvantaged both in the U.S. and Mexico.

Stephen Honeycutt

Stephen Honeycutt – Project Manager

Stephen Honeycutt brings more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of commercial and residential wood framing to his work as Project Manager at R.L. Mays Construction. He began his career in construction in 1975 as a carpenter, going on to form his own framing company only a few years later. Throughout the years, Stephen has worked as a foreman, estimator, general superintendent and project manager on a variety of projects from housing to commercial developments to schools. Clients value his wealth of knowledge of the industry from the ground up, professional presence, and prompt response to requests.

In his spare time, Stephen enjoys camping, hiking, off-roading and sailing.

Larry Herrmann

Larry Herrmann – Head Estimator

Larry Herrmann has brought his talents, knowledge and expertise to R.L. Mays Construction. A San Diego native, Larry spent 23 years as a builder of custom homes before moving on to project management in residential wood framing. As Head Estimator for R.L. Mays Construction, he has been instrumental in streamlining the bidding process, increasing the volume of work and making R.L. Mays one of the busiest framing companies in San Diego. Larry is valued for his ability to communicate clearly, solve problems and put programs and procedures in place.

An avid horseman, hunter and fisherman, Larry also plays hockey and enjoys building motorcycles with his two grown sons.

Don Fradette

Don Fradette – Estimator

Don Fradette has worked in wood framing for almost 25 years, and brings extensive experience in public works projects to his position as Estimator at R.L. Mays Construction. He started in the industry as a carpenter, and has also worked as a foreman and project manager throughout the years. In his work, Don draws on his many years of experience building in the public works sector, including his in-depth knowledge of school modernizations, libraries, fire stations and other municipal construction projects.

Outside of work, Don enjoys spending time with his wife, Mindy, and son, Sam. He also plays golf and regularly takes trips to Baja California, Mexico, for deep sea fishing excursions.

John McFarlane

John McFarlane – Estimator

In his more than 30 years of work in construction, John McFarlane has built a reputation for paying meticulous attention to his customers’ best interests. John brings solid knowledge of building specifications and materials to every bid he writes as an Estimator at R.L. Mays Construction. Clients appreciate his ability to value engineer projects to hold down costs and his commitment to delivering a superior product.

When he’s not working, John enjoys spending time with his wife Kathy and their two young daughters.

Brooke McIntyre

Brooke McIntyre – Office Manager

As one of the longest-standing employees at R.L. Mays Construction, Brooke McIntyre is a key player who understands all aspects of the company both inside and out. Brooke’s background in logistics management lends an organized approach to her work, which includes overseeing all functions of the office, assisting vendors and being the primary point of contact for all employees. She embodies the company’s open door policy, always available to answer questions and solve problems, and is seen by many as the glue that holds the office together.

Brooke holds a BFA in Journalism and Broadcasting from Central Michigan University.

Brooke also gives back to the community, aiding various charities through her work with Volunteer San Diego and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
